What’s new in WWDC 2021 for iOS Developers?

Author: Ulrike, Senior Manager Brandmarketing at TDSoftware

Apple’s WWDC 2021 week is finally underway. It's always an exciting time for iOS engineers. It's the one week a year where we're all newcomers to a whole range of features and APIs that Apple has just unleashed upon the world through their latest Xcode, macOS, iOS, tvOS, iPadOS, and watchOS betas. The entire iOS community comes together to share thoughts, experiences, opinions, and findings. For a whole week, Apple releases dozens of sessions on different topics, and we all scramble to watch them as soon as possible to make sure we're all up to date with whatever the latest and greatest is.

Apple revealed upgrades to many of its operating systems, most notably iOS 15. Apple also introduced macOS Monterey, previously known as macOS 12, along with watchOS 8 and iPadOS 15. The conference, all-virtual for the second year in a row, began June 7 and continues through June 11.

WWDC presentation reminds people of all the technology it makes available to developers. That includes sound isolation, scanning technologies, and the Swift programming language.

These are our highlights from the WWDC 2021 from a developer's point of view:

1. Xcode Cloud – Continuous Integration direct in Xcode

Apple announced Xcode Cloud, a privacy-focused continuous integration and deployment service developed by Apple and hosted on their cloud infrastructure. It accelerates the development and delivery of high-quality apps by bringing together cloud-based tools that help you build apps, run automated tests in parallel, deliver apps to testers, and view and manage user feedback. "Xcode Cloud has great potential to drastically speed up our development and testing process. Our beta application is already out",  so Alex, Team Lead App Development at TDSoftware.

2. Concurrency in Swift

At WWDC 2021, Apple introduced lots of brand new features to the Swift programming language to make coding applications easier and safer than ever before — even when you're dealing with concurrent systems, which are notoriously difficult to debug. Apple gave a nice overview of async/await, and the power of concurrency simplifies run multiple tasks. "With the new async-await pattern, we can drastically simplify writing asynchronous code."

3. Swift Playgrounds – Allows to program complete Swift apps on the iPad

Swift Playgrounds have been around for a while and provide a great way to start learning to code. Swift Playgrounds 4 now introduces the ability to write SwiftUI apps, view real-time previews, and ship apps to test users or the App Store directly. "Swift Playgrounds goes from toy to workhorse. Developing complete apps on the go on the iPad, testing them, and delivering them via TestFlight - we're excited!"
