Our diversity is what makes us strong

Author: Deborah, Recruiting Expert at TDSoftware

TDSoftware won this year's i-work award, an award that rewards diversity and inclusivity in the business world. We stand by our motto: We live diversity and are proud of it.

When I started my professional career as a recruiter, I did not know how important my role would be in creating a more inclusive and intersectional business world. I stumbled into this area more by accident. My studies in German literature in a cultural comparison with a focus on intercultural communication was, as I was already aware of, very broad so I had to direct my way with internships into the working world. Recruiting was one of the more interesting options for me. As a black woman, diversity was always very important to me. Even though I was born in Germany, I had a different cultural background through my father’s side, and with that, I experienced cultural obstacles already in school, through my studies, and in the working world. Seeing also my father fighting his way through the German business world I realized how important it is to have people with an open mind towards everyone, even if you deal with someone that expresses themselves very differently than what we in Germany are used to.

It might be surprising to some people but communicating within different cultures can lead to a lot of misunderstandings. Even a yes has a wide variety of meanings depending on where you come from. It can mean as much as I hear you or I hear you and have understood. Two very different things. As a recruiter, we literally help shape our company step by step. We are the gatekeepers in many ways. We decide if someone can get a foot in the door or not. Luckily someone opened the door for my father, and they never regretted it. As I saw this unfold, I realized how important it is that we have people like this in the working world, the so-called door openers. Working in many different companies as a recruiter I saw how this can be done wrong but also how this can be done very right.

The first thing that I learned when I started working for TDSoftware was “Diversity isn’t just something we want to write on our website to maintain a good image. How can we really implement this? How can we encourage women or people from the LGBTQ community? How can we protect mothers in our company?Being able to recruit people from all around the world and all different areas makes a huge difference. As a recruiter with the personal and professional background that I have, I am trying to make the recruiting process as pleasant as possible for our candidates. The success is visible with more than 40 percent of international employees that we are working with within the company. We want to go ahead and encourage other companies to join us. Because we strongly believe that diversity in a company only brings advantages.

Our diversity is what makes us strong!

When we took part in this year's Diversity Day, we wanted to ask ourselves what this word means to our employees and why it works so well in our company.

It quickly became clear that TDSoftware would not grow at all without the international specialists. We get many different insights into the digital world through specialists from abroad.  You can see the ideas coming from different cultures in our products. A purely German team couldn’t score as much with its product on the international market as we do. Diversity flows into the product, whether in the design or in the way it is handled.

One of our strategies is to focus on international students who will obtain a German degree. Freelancers and permanent employees from all over the world are also considered.

Our job advertisements are also always in English and aimed at an international target group. We try to make it clear that we are an international company and welcome employees from all around the world. In our job postings we use a “disclaimer" that we are actively working to make our company a diverse and safe environment for all employees.

When we have found a suitable employee, we invest time and effort them. We accompany them through the blue card visa process and are at their side every day with advice and assistance. We accompany them also on visits to the authorities and help them find an apartment. This strategy has worked for us.

We asked other employees how they perceive our company culture in comparison to others, it quickly became clear that our diversity is exactly what defines us. “Our diversity makes us strong,” said one employee, and that's exactly how we feel.
