eSIM is a Game-Changer!
Author: Ulrike, Senior Brand Marketing Manager at TDSoftware
eSIM technology has taken off and is already implemented in more than 100 consumer devices. Meanwhile, almost 200 operators offer eSIM consumer contracts worldwide today. A new study by leading research firm Kaleido Intelligence, which examines GSMA-compliant eSIMs across consumer and IoT markets, found that eSIM will witness substantial growth into the medium-term as eSIM compatible devices are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 45% between 2020 and 2025. It is expected that some 3 billion devices will have an installed eSIM in 2024, with growth driven by smartphones alongside IoT demand.
Network operators have begun to invest and capitalize on the wider adoption of IoT devices. Because of eSIM, IoT devices are projected to continue growing for quite some time into the future. As it turns out, eSIM technology is great for smart gadgets and for selling SIM cards for phones remotely. It is perfect for travelers looking to avoid roaming charges. Purchasing the right plan online and downloading it straight to your phone is a lot simpler than getting one abroad in a store, especially if you don’t speak the language.
The leading IoT device manufacturers are adapting existing use-cases and developing new ones with eSIM at the center. The speed of widespread adoption of eSIM still depends on mobile network operators and industry stakeholders' ability to educate themselves and their customers on the benefits. The rewards for those who move quickest will be to steal an enormous advantage on their less agile counterparts.
eSIM will be a standard feature for most smartphone devices worldwide by 2023, with Apple, Samsung, and Google all committing to this technology.
